SUBOTICA’S OWN NINA ĆUJIĆ FOR THE MAGLOČISTAČ PORTAL: ABOUT THE DREAMY CITY – PARK CITY

If it happens that you get noticed by someone as you are passing by a supermarket and are carrying a load of bags, it doesn’t often happen that they do not stop and ask if you require help or need a lift. This is especially true if it is raining

Just as people have their own stories, so do the places. This one is dedicated to the wonderful town in which I am spending the summer of 2017.

I am not someone who is easily fascinated by anything, but this town has won me over very quickly. Even though I have traveled a lot and have seen many cities such as New York, Boston, Washington, Krakow, Prague, Vilnius, Cairo…. Park City is at the top of my list of most beautiful places.

Just as with people, so it is with locations. We fall in love with some on first sight and are happier than with others. I find Park City irresistible and that is why I am giving it a chance to “tell” its own story. I shall share with you a few interesting details which I consider worth mentioning, all the while, of course, focusing on the people and their customs.

Even though it has not been even 150 years since its founding, this town has got a rich culture, and it is not strange that it was listed by the magazine Outside as the best place to live in The USA.

Rich with silver, Park City was born a mining town. After the mining had died down, the place relied on its relief which is suitable for winter sports which became the main tourist attraction, especially after the 2002. Summer Olympics which were held here.

Park City is not only known for skiing and mountaineering, but it’s also got its own glamorous cultural spark: Sundance film festival is held here.

Due to all of this, many famous people have chosen Park City as a place where they will own a house for holidays and relaxing. Therefore you can run into Michael Jordan, Catherine Heigl,  Will Smith, Mitt Romney, Lisa Kudrow and many others. So, nature and celebrities in one place.

Property is usually not locked here. Why should it be? People who mostly have houses here, only sometimes visit, and the real inhabitants there are only around 8.000. However, whether they are hosts or visitors, they are still remarkably kind. If it happens that you get noticed by someone as you are carrying a load of bags, it does not often happen that they do not stop and ask if you require help or need a lift. This is especially true if it is raining. It makes me happy to see that money is still not synonymous with arrogance.

What I also find characteristic are the restaurants. They are on every corner, many of the word’s kitchens in one place. Restaurants are of varying levels, from the most luxurious, to the cheap Burger King. I would like to single out a ceremonial Sunday brunch (a combination of breakfast and lunch). It is usually served from 11am to 1:30pm. Brunch consists of everything, from pastries, eggs, fruit, to meat dishes. Of course, there are also many salads and sweets. Brunch starts off with coffee or juice, continues mainly with alcoholic drinks such as Bloody Mary or Mimosa, and ends with champagne. All of this is usually served buffet style. Brunch is actually enjoyment when after a hard weekdays’ of work, on Sunday you sleep a bit longer, then get up hungry and hurry to the nearest restaurant, where food and drinks await you – the only worry being – what to choose!

Then there are lights! Lights are everywhere, on buildings, shops, houses, trees… When I noticed this upon coming here, I had to make sure that it was May and not December, that we are waiting for summer and not New Year’s eve. Every time I walk past the main street, I cannot escape the feeling that it will soon be midnight and that it is time to celebrate. Even though clubs and bars mostly work until 1am, Park City is a place for celebrations. Many young people come here looking for a good time because Park City offers many concerts and festivals. Decorated by lights and full of smiling people who have chosen it as their holiday destination, it really looks dreamy, like from some picture book.

Park City is also known for its ghost stories and haunted houses. There is a tour which goes around this spectral world. When my colleagues from work first mentioned, in a very serious tone, ghosts and their being around us, I tried hard not to burst out into laughter. Ghost stories are a very common part of culture here. They are mostly stories of miners who tragically died very young. Due to curiosity, I might even decide to go on one of these tours and then I will tell you all about it.

Being here in this place has been a really pleasant experience. My thanks to this dreamy city with which I have become such good “friends”.
